My Journey: From Cybersecurity Engineer to Southeast Asia Travel Expert
How I’m using 20 plus years of tech skills to build the internet’s most reliable Southeast Asia travel guide.
So how does a cybersecurity engineer end up building Southeast Asia’s most reliable travel guide? It’s not as random as it sounds. The same skills that protected companies from million-dollar breaches are now protecting travelers from expensive mistakes.
The Career Switch Nobody Saw Coming
For over 20 years, I secured company assets and protected companies from hackers and data breaches. My job as a cybersecurity engineer was all about:
- Building security systems that companies trusted with their most sensitive data.
- Creating compliance frameworks that met strict government and industry standards.
- Analyzing threats and stopping them before they caused damage.
- Verifying information in situations where mistakes could cost millions.
Then I made an unexpected move: I applied these same skills to solving travel problems in Southeast Asia.
Why I Made the Switch
I kept watching the same disasters unfold:
- Friends losing thousands on gear that broke in tropical humidity within weeks.
- Colleagues getting visa rejections because they followed outdated blog posts.
- Muslim travelers struggling to find reliable halal food and prayer spaces.
- Digital nomads making expensive mistakes that could’ve been easily avoided.
The real problem? Everyone was copying each other’s mistakes. Bad information was spreading like a virus, and nobody was fact-checking anything.
I thought: “If I can build and manage security systems that protect multimillion-dollar companies, I can build a research system that protects travelers from bad advice.”
The Three Big Problems I’m Solving
Problem #1: Gear That Actually Works in Tropical Heat
Most travel bloggers recommend gear that:
- Looks good in photos.
- Earns them the highest commission.
- Works great… in California or New York.
I analyze gear that survives:
- 95ยฐF heat with 80-90% humidity.
- Sudden monsoon downpours.
- Dusty buses and crowded markets.
- Months of daily use (not just a 2-week vacation).
My approach:
- Check manufacturer climate specifications.
- Read 1,000+ reviews from actual Southeast Asia travelers.
- Ask my network: “What lasted? What died?”
- Track brand failure rates in tropical conditions.
Problem #2: Reliable Muslim Travel Information
Finding halal food and prayer spaces shouldn’t be a guessing gameโespecially when you’re making Hijrah or traveling long-term. I’m building:
- Halal food maps for 11 countries (constantly updated)
- Mosque directories with prayer times and facilities Islamic school information for families relocating
- Real talk about challenges (not just “everything is perfect!”)
- Visa strategies specifically for Muslim long-term residents
Problem #3: Smart Travel Planning Systems
I’ve created decision-making tools that help you:
โ
Choose the right country (Thailand vs. Malaysia vs. Vietnam? Here’s the data.)
โ
Pick the best visa strategy (tourist visas vs. long-term optionsโwhat actually works?)
โ
Calculate real costs (not Instagram fantasy budgets)
โ
Pack strategically (what you actually need vs. what travel influencers sell)
My Background: Why This Actually Works
Cybersecurity Career (20+ Years)
- Built security systems for enterprise companies and startups
- Created and implemented cybersecurity frameworks (PCI DSS, SOC, ISO, GDPR) that passed strict audits and risk assessments
- Protected corporate assets and managed identity access controls
- Analyzed threats where a single mistake could cost millions
- Key skill: Verifying information when the stakes are high
Travel Research Specialization (Current)
- 64+ comprehensive articles & guides (and growing every month)
- Network of 100+ expats, travelers, and local contacts
- Special focus on digital nomads and Muslim travelers
- Continuous learning: SEO, user experience, content strategy
The connection? Both jobs require the same thing: building systems you can trust when it matters.
What I’m NOT
โ Not a “lifestyle influencer” โ I care about accuracy, not Instagram aesthetics
โ Not a “I’ve been everywhere” traveler โ I’m a “I’ve researched everything” specialist
โ Not using AI to pump out content โ Every guide is human-verified
โ Not selling you coaching โ I give you the systems to figure it out yourself
The Mission: Help 10,000 People Navigate Southeast Asia Successfully
Yeah, it’s a BIG undertaking! But here’s the plan:
Phase 1: Digital Nomads
The most detailed relocation guides for remote workersโvisa strategies, coworking WiFi speeds, cost breakdowns, the works.
Phase 2: Muslim Travelers
Comprehensive Hijrah resources that cover both spiritual needs and practical realities across Southeast Asia.
Phase 3: Smart Travelers
Gear recommendations based on actual tropical performance, not marketing hype or affiliate commissions.
I Make Mistakes (And Here’s How I Fix Them)
Southeast Asia changes fast. Visa rules update. Prices shift. New scams emerge.
When I get something wrong:
- โ I correct it immediately after verification
- โ I note the correction in the guide
- โ I thank the reader who caught it
- โ I update my research process to prevent it again
